Residents and sports clubs of Llanelli have been the first people to be welcomed through the doors of the newly opened, Canolfan Pentre Awel today, 15 October 2025.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Leader and Cabinet members greeted the local community through the doors of Canolfan Pentre Awel as it opens to the public.
One of the largest regeneration schemes in south-west Wales, Canolfan Pentre Awel is phase one of the Swansea Bay City Deal project, which has been jointly funded by UK and Welsh Governments and Carmarthenshire County Council. The funding provided from the Swansea Bay City Deal (UK and Welsh Governments) is £40 million.

The major milestone of one of Carmarthenshire’s flagship projects saw local sport groups take advantage of early access and have their first open training session in the new facility.

Canolfan Pentre Awel is Llanelli’s latest development, that brings together public, private and third sectors all under one roof, all designed to improve health and wellbeing, boost the economy and support people at all stages of life. The project is the first of its kind in Wales.

Canolfan Pentre Awel has easy bus routes, connecting Llanelli town centre, Parc Pemberton, Parc Trostre, Penyfan, Morfa, Canolfan Pentre Awel, Swiss Valley, Prince Philip Hospital and Felinfoel. For more information on this, please visit the website.

Speaking on the opening day, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Leader, Cllr Darren Price commented "The opening of Canolfan Pentre Awel is a clear example of what we can achieve through collaboration across services, sectors, and communities. Canolfan Pentre Awel is the result of years of partnership working and it reflects our shared commitment to improving health, education and economic outcomes for the people of Carmarthenshire. It aligns with our broader objectives to deliver sustainable growth, reduce inequality and create stronger, more connected communities."

An official opening event for Canolfan Pentre Awel will be held towards the end of the year, with representation from Welsh Government, UK Government, stakeholders and the wider community.
