An event was held by Carmarthenshire County Council and Bouygues UK to celebrate brand new hoardings at the new prestigious, multi-million-pound development Pentre Awel, designed by students at Carmarthen School of Art at Coleg Sir Gâr.
The project has a significant focus on community benefits and local college students were tasked with designing new hoardings for the site which set out how the Pentre Awel is meeting the 7 wellbeing goals of Wales’s Well-being of Future Generations Act.
- A prosperous Wales
- A healthier Wales
- A globally responsible Wales
- A resilient Wales
- A Wales of cohesive communities
- An equal Wales
- A Wales of vibrant culture and language.
The design project, now on show on the hoarding panels around the construction site, was undertaken as part of the college students’ curriculum and each panel represents each one of the wellbeing goals, aligning to the overall ethos and purpose of the Pentre Awel development.
Nina Williams, Bouygues UK’s social value advisor for Pentre Awel, said:
The Pentre Awel development is a key regeneration project for the Swansea Bay City Deal and Carmarthenshire County Council which will have a huge positive impact on the region and the people living within the community for years to come.
In recognition of this positive impact, we at Bouygues UK worked alongside Coleg Sir Gar to devise a design project for the college students. We wanted the hoarding around the site entrance to be designed to express the positive effects that Pentre Awel will have on the local community. The students have done an amazing job, all producing outstanding work that portray the core values of Pentre Awel in an eye catching and thought-provoking way.
Dr Ashley Wallington, Director of Curriculum at Coleg Sir Gar said:
The development of the hoarding panels for the Pentre Awel site provided our Art and Design learners at Coleg Sir Gar with a valuable 'live brief,' offering them the chance to collaborate with a major employer on a real-world project. Working with their client, they honed key employability skills and attributes essential for their future careers. We are so thankful for the opportunity that has been given to them.
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, Cllr Hazel Evans added:
Having the opportunity to meet the young people of Coleg Sir Gar who have created these excellent pieces of artwork has been time well spent. The students through their artwork show their vision for what Pentre Awel means to them and I am glad that these are on display for the public to see. As said on the boards, we are really looking forward to welcoming everyone to Pentre Awel, a development that can be accessed by all. Thank you to the students and their tutors for all their hard work on this project.
Pentre Awel is a truly collaborative scheme being delivered for the local community by Carmarthenshire County Council in partnership with Hywel Dda University Health Board, Universities and colleges and is part-funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal (£40million). It aims to create around 1,800 jobs over 15 years and boost the local economy by more than £450m.
The development will include a new state-of-the-art leisure centre and hydrotherapy pool together with education, research and business development space; a clinical research and delivery centre; and a well-being skills centre. Externally, Pentre Awel will enjoy landscaped outdoor public spaces for recreation, walking and cycling.
This design project formed part of Bouygues UK’s commitment to provide significant social value and engagement to surrounding schools, colleges and universities. It also has a school ambassador and community ambassador scheme.
